Wine

The wine-making process must meet high standards for preserving the special characteristics of any vintage.  Creating a wine's unique bouquet while respecting the taste and intensity of flavor from bottle to bottle is a delicate balancing act.

Clarification, polish filtration, yeast and bacteria removal, final filtration for microbial stabilization and utility water and gas filtration are all vital to maintaining that balance.  Contaminants such as particles, crystals, treatment residue, organic aggregates, bacteria and yeast can jeopardize the wine's taste.

Applying Pall's technology and expertise to the art of wine-making can remove risk and maintain total process control.

Wine Filtration Applications

Clarifying Filtration

Clarifying wine involves removing solids and yeast from fermentation.  Pall's filtration systems are a reliable and economical solution to clarifying processes previously requiring filter aids and/or centrifuges.  Our technology can limit the costs associated with the subsequent filtration stages by removing the majority of contaminants in this initial production stage.

Pre-Bottling Filtration

The removal of yeast and most bacteria in the pre-bottling filtration step results in increased efficiency in the final filtration, reducing overall costs. Pall's wide range of pre-filter products eliminate a large quantity of contaminants and prevent premature blockage of downstream filters. They maintain absolute performance, are highly efficient and mechanically strong.

Final Filtration

Microbial stabilization or final filtration before bottling removes microorganisms that can cause spoilage.  To ensure a clear and bright wine, Pall's final filtration solutions provides a biologically stable wine respecting the wine's flavor and unique characteristics. This final barrier ensures consistent and reproducible production runs each and every time.

Integrity Testing

Filter integrity testing is a fast and accurate method to assess the removal efficiency of a given filter in situ. The Forward Flow test, developed by Pall, is internationally acknowledged as a truly objective and non-destructive method to check if the filter still meets specification and is correctly installed. Test results provide a clear and accurate indication of filter integrity prior to its use.

Brand awareness and product consistency are imperative. A final filter is used to eliminate the risk of microbial contamination and therefore protect the quality of the final product. Integrity testing with a Palltronic® Compact Star is a reliable, cost effective and operator-friendly method to predict filter integrity. This information is used to ensure quality manufacturing standards.

Utilities Filtration (Gas and Steam)

Gas Filtration
For sparkling wines, gas impurities during carbonation can affect product uniformity.  Pall's technology purifies carbon dioxide and lowers the process risks associated with carbonation.  Filters for tank venting, air and steam comprise the balance of our gas utility technologies.

Water Filtration and Bottle Washing

Water Filtration
Water used in wine making must meet the highest standards for purity.  For filter flushing, sanitization or for irrigation, Pall's filtration systems enable water free of particles, colloids and micro-organisms.
