These discontinuously operating pressure filters incorporate a filter pack of alternating high-performance filter plates for inlet and outlet, separated from each other by filter sheets, and are compressed and tightened between a fixed and mobile cover. Tightening of the filter pack is done manually by tightening a spindle or automatically with a hydraulic tightening device. As opposed to chamber filter presses designed for processing suspensions and sludge, the sheet filter primarily clarifies and sterilizes large product volumes with low non-soluble solids.
Depth filter sheets are the primary filter media used in these presses. Options include filter sheets for coarse, clarifying, and fine filtration as well as microorganism reducing or sterilizing filtration.
Every filter plate is equipped with two or more round feed and discharge sockets (channel eyelets). When tightening the plate, pack gaskets seal the channel eyelets to form the feed and discharge channel. The unfiltered product passes through the feed channels into the inlet plate and the depth filter sheet. The outlet plates pick up the filtered product where it is discharged through the outlet channels.
Advantages:
Large filter area
Flexible, modular design (filter area and medium can readily be altered)
Simple transfer from the laboratory to the production scale
Easy, operator-friendly handling
Reliable filtration results from use of standardized filter sheets
Low maintenance costs
The standard design of sheet filters covers a wide range of applications. Special designs have been developed which permit double or multiple filtration within one chassis. For this purpose, the filtration blocks are separated from each other by one or several changeover plates. For prefiltration and post filtration, different filter sheet grades may be installed.
Added features include heatable sheet filters for the filtration of high viscosity fluids. They incorporate heatable frames fitted between the individual filter plates.
Sheet filters with externally arranged product channels (“eyelets”) and pliable gaskets are not suitable for some applications such as the filtration of solvents. Those without gaskets integrate the eyelets into the plates and sheets and the filter sheet itself serves as a seal. Such sheet filters ware mainly used in chemical and pharmaceutical applications.
