Analytical Sample Preparation Application Selection Guide
Analytical Sample Preparation Application Selection Guide

Products for High Throughput Filtration
As samples get smaller and more numerous, the need for novel methods for high throughput sample preparation has led Pall to develop new filtration devices that simplify and expedite the sample preparation process. This table outlines general guidelines to the appropriate filter plate size for different volumes of fluid:

Volume to be Filtered Filter Type Typical Hold-up Volume
< 900 µL AcroPrep™ 96 1 mL Filter Plate < 20 µL
< 2 mL AcroPrep 24 Filter Plate < 50 µL

Products for Automated Filtration
Acrodisc® PSF Syringe Filters are the only syringe filters to receive Caliper Life Sciences' (Zymark) Automation Certified guarantee. This certification is granted to syringe filters that meet the stringent requirements for automated dispensing, robotic handling, and fit and operation in the Prelude*, MultiDose*, TPWII, and Benchmate* workstations. Acrodisc PSF syringe filters are fully compatible for use with Caliper automated workstations and facilitate smooth operation and worry-free performance 24 hours a day.

The Acrodisc PSF syringe filter has been fully redesigned to address the specific requirements of automation systems.

  • Smooth Filter-to-filter Release – The Acrodisc PSF syringe filter has been designed so the filters cannot be forced too tightly together or to the automation components. This allows a smooth release while still meeting ANSI/ISO filter luer standards.
  • Consistent Turret Advancement – The Acrodisc PSF syringe filter's quick-releasing filter luers separate easily. The slightly rounded upper shoulder on the device allows the filter to consistently slide under the wedge for trouble-free separation from the filter stack and smooth filter advancement along the workstation's track.
  • Strict "Outside Filter Geometry" – The Acrodisc PSF syringe filter has strict dimensional specifications in height and width to ensure proper alignment and smooth operation.
  • Exceptional Housing Strength – As with the original ring-molded Acrodisc syringe filter, filter squeeze is not a problem for the Acrodisc PSF syringe filter. The specially designed support ribbing, thick device walls, and proprietary housing weld ensure a robust seal and a filter housing that can withstand excessive force both internally and externally.

Acrodisc PSF syringe filters are available with AutoPack™ packaging, convenient tubes that can be directly loaded onto automated testing systems. AutoPack packaging is also available for standard syringe filters with Nylon, PTFE, PVDF, and Glass Fiber membranes.

Products for Centrifugal Filtration
For applications requiring maximum filtrate recovery from limited sample volumes, the GHP Nanosep® Centrifugal Device is your best choice. These devices are ideal for particulate removal prior to sample analysis (HPLC, IC, GC, or MS) and removal of precipitates (metals, polymers, or crystals). GHP membrane is ideal for aqueous solutions and offers maximum chemical compatibility for aggressive solvents. For sample volumes from 50 to 500 µL.

Products for Difficult-to-Filter Solutions Requiring Prefiltration
To clarify samples or when processing difficult-to-filter solutions, 1 to 5 µm or glass fiber filters are suggested. Prefilters generally precede smaller pore size final filters and allow the user to process larger fluid volumes before the filter plugs.

Acrodisc PSF Syringe Filters have a serial glass fiber prefilter to allow for maximum throughput and faster flow rates than standard glass fiber prefilter devices. The multi-layered prefilter traps particulate rated from > 40 to 1 µm.

Products for Dissolution Testing
The low drug and protein adsorption characteristics of the IC Acrodisc Syringe Filter make this product ideal for dissolution testing applications. For difficult-to-filter dissolution or aqueous testing samples, choose a 0.8 µm Acrodisc syringe filter.

Products for Ion Chromatography
Ion Chromatography Acrodisc Syringe Filters are optimized to provide the most consistent results when analyzing ionic species, even for the most sensitive analyses. Pall certifies Ion Chromatography (IC) Acrodisc syringe filters have been tested using a highly sensitive IC protocol to monitor inorganic extractables. Actual background levels of filter extractables are typically less than 20 ppb for chloride, 6 ppb for nitrate, 1 ppb for phosphate, and 10 ppb for sulfate.

Products for Life Sciences Samples
For consistent, enhanced sample preparation and prefiltration in biomolecule applications, choose the Acrodisc PSF Syringe Filter with GHP, Supor®, Versapor®, or HT Tuffryn® membrane. These devices are excellent for sample preparation prior to HPLC or IC for purification, separation, and characterization studies of biomolecules such as synthetic peptides, nucleic acids, and recombinant and native proteins. Product features include:
  • Stringent manufacturing controls over the membranes and devices. ISO certified and manufactured under cGMP's.
  • Polypropylene housing reduces extractable materials.
  • Membranes perform well with biomolecules in aqueous solutions of varying buffer ranges and salt concentrations. Choose GHP membrane for low binding and high protein recovery in a variety of biomolecule applications. Choose Supor membrane for consistent results in the filtration of ionic species for IC.

Products for Low-volume Samples
The minispike outlet, available on the 13 mm Acrodisc syringe filter, allows for minimal sample holdup and easy dispensing into autosampler vials. For syringe filtration of even smaller volumes, choose a 4 mm device. For centrifugal filtration of microliters of sample, the GHP Nanosep centrifugal device allows rapid sample processing with extremely high recoveries.
