Abstract
Fine filtration is used in paper machine lubrication systems to provide the clean oil needed for long bearing and gear life and for proper operation of metering and control valves. To minimize purchase, storage, installation and disposal costs, it is important that maximum filter element service life be achieved. In addition, element service life can be a measure of the condition of the lubricated equipment and of the oil in the lubrication system. Procedures for determining filter element life, causes of reduced element life and methods for their detection and elimination are discussed. Although this article focuses on paper machine lube systems, many of the principles can be applied to other filter applications.
