Effect on Cylinders

Cylinder rods and seal systems are major contributors to contaminant ingression. The extended rod, coated with oil film, will capture particulate contamination from the surrounding atmosphere. When the rod re-enters the cylinder housing, system fluid rinses the particles from the rod into system hydraulic oil.

Clearance size contamination consequences

Rod seal wear: Loss of oil through leakage
Bronze bushing wear:   Loss of rod alignment
Piston seal wear:   Loss of cylinder speed
  Loss of holding characteristics
Piston bearing wear: Loss of alignment
