On 21 of January 2021, the new European Drinking Water Directive (EU 2020/2184) has come into force. This new directive renovates the 20 years old 98/83/EC, reinforcing the importance of water quality standards and harmonization among the member states.

Speaker: Dr. Sebastián Crespi 

 

Dr. Sebastián Crespi is President and Scientific Director of Biolinea Int. and of ATA Ecotecnologia e Higiene del Agua. He is co-author of the “European technical guidelines for the prevention, control and investigation of infections caused by Legionella species”. He has been a consultant to the World Health Organization, the European Centre for Disease Prevention and Control (ECDC) and the European Union on issues related to water hygiene and the prevention of Legionnaires' disease. Recently he has participated in the preparation of the different guidelines prepared by ESGLI (ESCMID Study Group for Legionella Infections) for managing Legionella in different water systems during the COVID-19 pandemic

Benedikt Schaefer works as scientist for the microbiology of drinking water and pool water at the German Federal Environmental Agency (UBA), since 1992. He is also a consultant at WaterMicro GmbH, Schwarzenbach, Germany, for accreditation assessments and education.

From 2003 until 2015 he has been the Chair of ISO/TC 147/SC 04 “Water Quality” working on microbial methods development and standardisation for all kinds of water. He is member of advisory groups for the European Commission for water microbiology and in 2011 Benedikt has been co-author for the WHO publication “Water Safety in Buildings”.

 

From 2015 until 2020 he has been project leader for UBA in a joint research project “Legionella in drinking water distribution systems –assessment of drinking water analysis results and epidemiological case control study” together with Robert Koch-Institute (RKI) and the German Legionella Reference Lab in Dresden.
