Membranes For Liquid Filtration & Separation

Our liquid filtration membranes have been used for decades by leading medical device manufacturers. Explore the critical attributes we offer!

Reduce the Risk of Potential Negative Effects to Patients

Media is easily water-wettable and is preferred for the filtration of aqueous solutions

Hydrophilic membranes used in a healthcare setting may be required to reduce the risk of bacterial contamination or retain larger particulates formed by the precipitation of various drug combinations used in patient therapies.

Our liquid filtration membranes have been used for decades by leading medical device manufacturers. They have enabled safe and effective IV drug preparation and administration and displayed exceptional performance qualities in the growing field of cellular and molecular-based therapeutics.

Performance characteristics of a selected membrane will determine the efficacy of the final device.  We offer membranes manufactured with these critical attributes:

  • high flow rates
  • absolute pore size ratings
  • biocompatibility
  • low or high binding

Selecting Hydrophilic Membranes for Liquid Filtration Applications

Selecting a liquid filtration membrane for infusion therapy requires a general understanding of the associated features and how they correlate to performance outputs.

Features to consider:

  • flow rates
  • pore size
  • chemical compatibility
  • protein binding capacity

Key Filtration Consideration:

Flow Rate: When identifying the required flow rate, the first consideration is pore size and required liquid throughput. The pore rating dictates the functional attributes of the membrane.

Protein Binding: The use of low protein binding membranes is critical in the delivery and administration of biotherapeutic drugs. Low protein binding membranes such as polyethersulfone (PES) help reduce the risk of potential drug interactions, as well as protect the integrity and consistency of the therapeutic dose.

Bacterial Retention: It is important to consider the risk of bacterial and fungal contamination during long-term IV therapy. The appropriate membranes should be incorporated into medical devices to retain these organisms and reduce the risk of potential negative effects to the patient.

Extractables: are substances that may leach or otherwise come off the membrane or filtration system which may end up in the fluid being infused into a patient. Wetting agents may offer advantages in filtration rates, however, they may introduce the possibility of extractables.

Material Compatibility: As new drugs continue to be developed, varying combinations increase the opportunity for incompatibility. Many different factors can influence the compatibility and stability of drugs with the components in a medical device set such as:

  • Preservatives
  • Buffering systems
  • Temperature and concentration
  • Chemical reactions

We have an extensive library of material compatibility data on our portfolio of hydrophilic membranes for infusion therapy. Let our experts assist you in selecting the optimal materials for your intravenous development programs.

Some of our most popular hydrophilic membranes are:

  • Supor® Polyethersulfone Membranes
  • Versapor® W/WA Membranes

We have extensive experience with manufacturing FDA-regulated devices and understand the quality specifications and standards that come with such endeavors.  Our hydrophilic membranes for liquid filtration are manufactured in accordance with ISO 9001.

We continue researching ways to use membranes to capture, collect, separate, and prepare cells using new technologies.
