Potable Water in Public & Residential Facilities
Background, Facts and Solutions for Water Management Programs
In water distribution systems biofilm can develop within a few days even if the water meets drinking water criteria. Biofilm protects the microorganisms within from chemical agents and thermal disinfection procedures, and is extremely difficult to completely eradicate once established. Biofilms contain a large variety of waterborne microorganisms including protozoa (e.g. Acanthamoeba), fungi (e.g. Aspergillus spp., Fusarium spp.) and a number of human pathogenic bacteria.
Legionella pneumophila is perhaps the best-known waterborne bacterium colonizing biofilm, and it can be found in both central storage areas (e.g. water tanks) as well as peripheral water outlets. Pseudomonas aeruginosa is waterborne bacterium known to be a cause of infections, including pneumonia, wound and skin infections. With critical levels of microorganism contamination, extensive measures may be required to make water suitable for drinking, bathing and other applications. Closure of shower and wash-basin outlets, during the time that water system disinfection measures are carried out, may lead to impacted user logistics, negative media exposure and economic consequences. Failure to effectively maintain potable water systems can have legal sequelae.
Filtration as an Engineering Solution
Pall Point-of-Use (POU) Water Filters offer an immediate, validated barrier against waterborne microorganisms. Security of the water supply with 100% flexibility, and no long term capital commitments and easy to install. Connection is made simple by use of Quick Connect Adaptors which require no additional plumbing, engineering work or interruption to the water supply. Use of these filters may allow water outlets to remain in use during periods of critical contamination within buildings, and also be appropriate during periods of building work or maintenance to assure quality of the water supply.
Typical applications include:
- Hygiene procedures
- Drinking water
- Food preparation
- Ice machines
