Medical | Pall Corporation webinar series
More than 140 species of Mycobacterium have been identified globally, and most Mycobacterium species are environmental opportunistic pathogens called Nontuberculous mycobacteria (NTM) which occur in water (including drinking water distribution systems), soils and dusts and can lead to disease affecting the lungs, skin and soft tissues. NTM is of increasing concern globally, especially in healthcare institutions.
Waterborne Opportunistic Pathogens
Objectives:
- Learn the basics of Nontuberculous mycobacteria (NTM) and about their epidemiology
- Understand the risk factors for NTM infections
- Recognize the characteristics unique to NTM
- Understand why NTM proliferate in plumbing systems
- Identify how to reduce NTM risk in plumbing systems, especially in healthcare
