More than 140 species of Mycobacterium have been identified globally, and most Mycobacterium species are environmental opportunistic pathogens called Nontuberculous mycobacteria (NTM) which occur in water (including drinking water distribution systems), soils and dusts and can lead to disease affecting the lungs, skin and soft tissues. NTM is of increasing concern globally, especially in healthcare institutions.
