Protecting your instrumentation

 

Filtering analytical samples and mobile phase solutions using the correct filtration device is an economical way to reduce instrument downtime, maintenance and associated costs.

 

Sample filtration prolongs injector life, prevents the blocking of capillaries and protects detector cells from particulate contamination.

 

Mobile phase filtration will both degas and remove unwanted particulate. Contamination can cause the plugging of the sinker and column frits, may damage pump valves and block capillaries.

Filtration of both samples and mobile phases will also prevent microbial growth that can cause increased baseline noise.

 

Protecting your column

 

Proper analytical chromatography column selection and integrity is crucial for efficient compound separation and identification. The packing of high-performance columns is composed of small particles of narrow size distribution.

 

Injection of contaminated particulate-laden samples into columns will block the flow path between the packing and impact column integrity, causing loss of resolution, poor peak shape, split peaks and high back pressure. Therefore, making analytical results difficult to interpret and shortening column life.

 

Sample filtration using a membrane of the correct pore size will prevent particulate contamination from blocking. For example, if a column packing is 3 μm in diameter then, using simple mathematics, it is possible to calculate that the flow path is 0.43 μm, therefore a 0.2 μm filter would prevent particulate from plugging the column.

 

Protecting your results

 

Filtration helps ensure the integrity of your instrument and columns, offering you more reliable and reproducible results. However, when filtering a sample, solvent or mobile phase solution it’s important that the filtration device does not interfere with your analytes, either by adding contaminants or by binding to analytes.

Our accurate pore size ratings offer better chromatography, and instrument and column protection. The Acrodisc One™ syringe filters with wwPTFE can extend column life by up to 52 times.

 

 

Effects of filters on HPLC column life following injections of unfiltered and filtered 0.05% latex sphere suspensions. With unfiltered samples, the column failed due to plugging after 19 injections. Samples passed through competitor filters plugged the columns after 500 injections. No increase in backpressure was observed after 1000 injections of samples filtered with Pall Acrodisc One syringe filters.

 

 

Our HPLC, LCMS and IC certified sample prep filtration devices have been designed, manufactured and tested to ensure low levels of extractables.

 

HPLC Certification

Pall HPLC certification ensures that analytical results will not be compromised by extractable filter materials. Our membranes have been tested for compatibility with the common HPLC solvents water, methanol, and acetonitrile, using established HPLC procedures. In addition, to verify low levels of UV-detectable extractables, samples of the entire HPLC Acrodisc syringe filter line are evaluated prior to release.

 

LCMS Certification

Pall certifies that all lots of water wettable polytetrafluoroethylene (WWPTFE) membrane used in the Acrodisc MS syringe filters have been tested according to established LCMS techniques. Each box of product comes with a certificate containing Total Ion Current (TIC) chromatograms that show all detected peaks relative to an Internal Standard. Results for integrity, burst, and flow rate tests are also included on the certificate.

 

IC Certification

Pall Laboratory confirms that Ion Chromatography (IC) Acrodisc syringe filters have been tested using a highly sensitive IC protocol to monitor inorganic extractables. For IC applications, our IC Acrodisc polyethersulfone (PES) syringe filters are certified for low levels of inorganic extractables. Actual background levels of filter extractables are typically less than 20 ppb for chloride, 6 ppb for nitrate, 1 ppb for phosphate, and 10 ppb for sulfate.

 

Chemical compatibility is a critical consideration when selecting the best sample prep syringe filter or mobile phase disc filter for your application. Pall provide a range of analytical filter membranes, this includes our wwPTFE membrane which is compatible with the majority of common solvent and sample types.
