Reliable Protection for High-Performance Liquid Chromatography (HPLC) Systems

Sample Preparation that’s Critical for Analytical

Filtration of both analytical samples and mobile phase solutions using the correct filtration device is a simple and economical way to protect liquid chromatography instrumentation and chromatography columns from particulate contamination.

Sample filtration prolongs injector life, prevents the blocking of capillaries and protects detector cells from contamination, reducing instrument downtime, maintenance and associated costs. Filtration of samples using a Pall Acrodisc syringe filter can extend column life by up to 52 times by efficiently removing particulate that could block the flow path between the column’s packing.

With over 70 years of membrane development expertise, Pall’s proprietary filtration technology delivers excellent quality and reliability that you can count on. Our accurate pore size ratings ensure efficient particulate retention, offering superior instrument and column protection.

Filtration helps ensure the integrity of your instrument and columns, offering you more reliable and reproducible results. However, when filtering a sample, solvent or mobile phase solution it’s important that the filtration device does not interfere with your analytes, either by adding contaminants or by binding to analytes.

Reliable Certification and Quality

Pall specifically selects the highest grade materials and performs rigorous extraction methods on our membrane products to eliminate the occurrence of undesired artifacts.

Our HPLC certification ensures that analytical results will not be compromised by extractable filter materials. Our membranes have been tested for compatibility with the common HPLC solvents water, methanol, and acetonitrile, using established HPLC procedures. In addition, to verify low levels of UV-detectable extractables, samples of the entire HPLC Acrodisc syringe filter line are evaluated prior to release.

In addition to the HPLC certification performed to evaluate UV absorbing extractables, Acrodisc syringe filters are subjected to quality control testing. These tests ensure compliance with the product’s specifications. The quality control tests include:

  • Visual quality tests
  • Liquid flow rates
  • Bubble point
  • Burst test
  • Liquid UV/IC extractables for certification

For HPLC/UHPLC filtration applications Pall supply a number of different membrane chemistries and pore size configurations to ensure the best compatibility with your sample and application requirements.

Aqueous Samples

Hydrophilic membranes, which have an affinity for water, are preferable when filtering aqueous samples. Choose Pall filters with wwPTFE, PES, Nylon, or PVDF membranes.

Gases and Aggressive Organic Solvents

Hydrophobic membranes repel water and are inert to aggressive organic solvents, making them ideal for gases and organic solvents. Choose Pall filters with PTFE membrane.

Aqueous and Organic-Solvent Solutions

Different polymeric membranes have different chemical compatibilities. Based on the application and chemical compatibility, there may be one or several membranes and Acrodisc syringe filter possibilities. Generally, one filter type will not function for all applications due to limitations in hydrophobicity/hydrophilicity and chemical compatibility. However, Pall hydrophilic wwPTFE membrane is compatible for both aqueous and organic applications.

We bring together our membranes with superior performance, outstanding housing materials, and devices designed to maximize processing accuracy and speed. From syringe filters and spin filters to multi-well filter plates, our analytical sample preparation devices feature optimized effective filtration areas that maximize the filtration throughput of your sample while minimizing sample hold-up volume.

Nanosep MF Centrifugal Devices

Centrifugal devices are ideal for labs with medium sample throughput and are simple to use syringeless devices. The sample to be processed is pipetted into the upper reservoir of the device. The device is placed into the appropriate centrifuge and spun.

Filtrate can be recovered by removing the lower reservoir of the device and using a pipette or pipette tip to remove the liquid. Retentate can be recovered from the centrifugal device simply by pipetting it from the upper reservoir. Multiple devices can be processed in one centrifugal run.

Pall Nanosep MF devices are available with wwPTFE membrane with either 0.2 μm or 0.45 μm pore size.

AcroPrep Advance 96-well Filter Plates

Filter Plates are ideal for processing numerous small volume samples and can be used manually using a vacuum manifold or on robotic automated handling systems.

Pall AcroPrep Advance 96-well Filter Plates are available in 350 μL, 1 mL and 2 mL well volume formats, and with Pall’s wwPTFE membrane with either 0.2 μm or 0.45 μm pore size.

wwPTFE, water wettable polytetrafluroethylene membrane is ideal for aqueous solutions and offers maximum chemical compatibility for aggressive solvents.

  • Well design increases well-to-well consistency for sample processing and recovery
  • Outlet tips minimize the formation of hanging drops, reducing the chance of cross contamination following filtration
  • Individually sealed membranes and biologically inert housing minimizes the possibility of sample cross-contamination or loss
  • Designed to meet SBS/ANSI guidelines, ensuring compatibility with standard processing equipment

Mobile Phase Filtration

Mobile phase filtration will both degas and remove unwanted particulate. Contamination can cause the plugging of the sinker and column frits, may damage pump valves and block capillaries.

Pall provide simple, safe and effective mobile phase filtration devices and membranes.
