Risk Management for US Healthcare Water Systems: Controlling Waterborne Pathogens

We know healthcare water systems need strict risk management. Our water Filters may aid in infection control as a barrier to waterborne microbial pathogens.

Hospitals and Long Term Care Facilities are expected to effectively manage their complex in-premise water systems as per US Industry Standard (ASHRAE 188Legionellosis: Risk Management for Building Water Systems, June 26, 2015) and as supported by the CDC Toolkit.

However, as recently advised by the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services, it is not just Legionella that Healthcare Facilities are concerned about; other waterborne opportunistic pathogens may also grow and spread in facility water systems and potentially lead to negative outcomes for immunocompromised patients in high risk areas such as Bone Marrow Transplant units, Organ Transplant units, Oncology, Neonatology, Burns and Adult Intensive Care Units.

Pall-Aquasafe and QPoint® Point-of-Use Water Filters are sterilizing grade filters validated as per the industry standard (American Standard Test Method F838-15a: Determining Bacterial Retention of Membrane Filters Utilized for Liquid Filtration) as well as in lifelong use. They are also validated to remove a wide range of pathogens such as Legionella pneumophila serogroup 1, Pseudomonas aeruginosa, Escherichia coli, Stenotrophomonas maltophilia, Mycobacterium gordonae, Cryptosporidium parvum and Aspergillus fumigatusfrom the drinking water supply.

By acting as a barrier to waterborne microbial pathogens, Pall-Aquasafe and QPoint Water Filters may aid in infection control. These filters can help support Water Program Teams to manage their in-premise water systems by keeping services running while engineering and maintenance activities are implemented in the background, and in some cases for longer term use in selected high-risk patient population areas.

Pall-Aquasafe™ Disposable Water Filters

The Pall-Aquasafe Disposable Water Filters provide filtered water suitable for washing and drinking*, superficial wound cleansing, cleaning of equipment used in medical procedures and washing of surgeon's hands for up to 31 day use. The double layer sterilizing grade Supor® membrane is rated and validated at 0.2 μm, and may aid in infection control by acting as a barrier to waterborne particulates and pathogens. To minimize the risk of retrograde contamination, the filter housing material utilizes silver technology as an enhanced, non-leaching bacteriostatic additive.
