Centrisep® Engine Advanced Protection System (EAPS) for NH Industries’ NH90 Helicopter

Fit and Forget Engine Protection
The NH90 helicopter has two main roles: tactical troop transport, and anti-ship/anti-submarine warfare. It can be operated in any theatre of operation, at any time of day or night, and in all types of weather conditions.

The “fit and forget” Centrisep® Engine Advanced Protection System (EAPS) is an ideal solution for such challenging operations. The system shields engine inlets from airborne contamination, resulting in:

• Safer operation by protecting against sand and dust, foreign object damage (FOD), ice, and snow
• Increased operational availability
• Protection against engine erosion
• Increased time between overhaul

On the NH90, the unit consists of four panels (two vertical, two horizontal) fitted on either side of the helicopter, integrated into the engine cowls.

Pall’s Centrisep EAPS is certified for operation in case of inadvertent entry into icing conditions, and therefore is allowed to operate without the need for a by-pass door and differential pressure monitoring systems.

Maintenance

The Centrisep EAPS is a “fit and forget” system;  there are no inlet barrier filters to replace or clean.  As with all aircraft equipment, routine visual inspection is recommended. In case of damage, please refer to the Component Maintenance Manual, available through Pall Aerospace.

The Pall Centrisep EAPS solution is an environmentally friendly alternative to oil-wetted barrier filters. There is no filter replacement and no daily cleaning as with oil-based solutions, which are difficult and expensive to dispose of.

The NH90 helicopter is fitted with Pall's Centrisep EAPS, a “fit and forget” solution that provides enhanced protection against engine erosion.

1990	A back-to-back comparison test by the engine OEM clearly demonstrated the superiority of the Centrisep EAPS over the integrated particle separator (IPS).
2000	Pall Aerospace and the composite specialist SLCA were selected by Eurocopter to supply the Centrisep EAPS cowl of the NH90 helicopter. A joint development initiative followed.
2001 / 2003	Development successfully completed. Outstanding dust separation efficiency achieved. No power penalty in hover.
2004	First flight of the NH90 equipped with Pall Aerospace/SLCA Centrisep EAPS cowl.
