Food & Beverage Water Filtration
Water Treatment Solutions to Support Your Food and Beverage Process
Why Is Water Filtration Important in Food and Beverage Production?
Water filtration helps food and beverage manufacturers maintain water quality for ingredients, cleaning operations and production processes. Effective filtration can support product quality, operational efficiency and the performance of downstream water treatment systems.
Water is a key resource for successful food and beverage plant operation. As an ingredient, water quality can impact final product taste and appearance. As a utility for rinsing, cleaning and product pushing, water quality can affect the efficiency of packaging, bottling or production facilities.
Feed water content and quality can vary according to raw water source and pretreatment. Incoming water may come from several sources including municipal water supplies, surface water, ground water and springs. These sources present different challenges but the goal is the same: to provide low-SDI feed water for downstream processes.
Selecting the right water treatment solution is key to achieving these goals.
How Is Process Water Filtered in Food and Beverage Production?
Process water filtration can be used at different stages within a food and beverage production facility.
An initial coarse clarification step may be employed for general-use water in applications including:
- CIP and wash water
- Cooling water
- Equipment seal water
A second pre-filtration step, typically down to 1 µm, might be employed to remove particles, Cryptosporidium oocysts and Giardia from water used for:
- Equipment sanitisation
- Cleaning of crossflow systems
- Washing fruits and vegetables
A membrane filter may also be employed to produce microbiologically stable water used for product dilution or bottle rinsing.

Which Water Filtration Solution Is Right for Your Process?
Pall offers water filtration solutions for different source water conditions, water quality requirements and food and beverage applications.
Explore the options below to identify the most relevant solution for your process.
Pall Aria™ Water Treatment Systems
Pall Aria™ systems are simple, automated membrane units designed specifically for water treatment. The systems use regenerable hollow fibre microfiltration membranes with a unique air-scrubbing process to replace traditional water treatment filters.
The system can remove virtually all suspended solids from surface water along with precipitated inorganics from ground water in a cost-effective, compact footprint.
Membrane filtration provides a higher clean water yield in fewer processing steps than conventional treatment. The modular design allows for expansion to match production demands while Pall Aria’s high-solids capability enables process flexibility.
Pall Aria™ systems can be positioned:
- At the water source
- On incoming plant water
- Upstream of reverse osmosis systems to extend membrane life
- At the point of use for equipment rinsing and cleaning
Ultipleat® High Flow Filters
For applications with lower SDI values or where water quality is less variable, Pall’s large-diameter filter solutions can be adapted to individual production requirements.
Ultipleat® High Flow filters accommodate high flow rates with simple handling and faster change-outs at low investment and operating costs. These filters can replace large, multi-round traditional cartridge filter assemblies
Pall® Coreless Filter Elements
Pall® Coreless filter elements can be used in applications with lower SDI values or where water quality is less variable.
These large-diameter filter solutions can be adapted to individual production requirements. They accommodate high flow rates with simple handling and faster change-outs at low investment and operating costs.
