Emflon® PFR Filter Cartridges

Validated, Reliable Sterilizing Filtration of Air and Gas, Providing Protection Against Microbiological  and Particulate Contamination

What are the critical attributes of air and gas cartridge filters?

Sterilizing filtration of air and gas is widely used across food and beverage and industrial applications to ensure process and brand protection and consumer safety. Commonly applied in compressed air and gas or tank venting applications, they provide a sterile barrier removing microorganisms and particulates from the air or gases that directly contact products or equipment surfaces exposed to them. Reliable and efficient sterilizing filtration is essential to prevent contamination by microorganisms. Choosing the right filtration is critical - filtration failures can cause costly disruptions, product delays, replacement expenses and unfulfilled customer expectations.

To ensure optimal results, filters must meet the following criteria:

Tested and Validated for Microbial Retention

Microbial validation is the most sensitive validation method of sterile air cartridge filters. Claims of expected microbial removal performance should not be based on filter media pore size rating.

Hydrophobicity

Materials selected for air filters should have a high degree of hydrophobicity to secure microorganism removal under both liquid and aerosol bacterial challenge conditions.

Robustness

Subject to repeated in-situ steam sterilization heating and cooling cycles during operation, it's essential that they have an extremely robust design.

Meet the Pall filter that will solve your air and gas filtration challenges

Pall’s Emflon family of validated membrane cartridge filters addresses industry needs for the highest sterility assurance level. Emflon membrane filters fulfill a microbial liquid bacteria challenge validation that meets requirements to remove at ≥107 cfu/cm2 effective filtration area, according to ASTM Method 838-05, providing sterile effluent according to FDA Guidelines (2004).

How do Emflon PFRW filters tackle the challenges of sterilizing air and gas?

  • Hydrophobic, 100% PFTE membranes

    • Double  layer membrane featuring a fixed pore structure, with no chance of media flexing or unloading of contaminants which is often a concern with depth filters.
    • Emflon PFR filters are validated for microbial removal and repeated stream cycling, providing excellent resistance against mechanical damage.
    • Filters meet national and international standards for food contact compliance.
  • Validated for 0.2 micron bacteria removal in liquid and aerosol challenge tests

    • Sterile effluent results in improved fermentation yields and reliable protection from contamination.
  • 100% integrity tested prior to dispatch

    • Emflon filters are 100% tested before product release. These in situ integrity tests are correlated to liquid bacterial challenge tests, demonstrating the filter's retention and removal efficiency when challenged under the most stringent liquid suspension.
