Improving Reliability and Safety in Solvent Filtration for a PDH Unit

Overview

A propane dehydrogenation (PDH) facility producing propylene was facing recurring challenges in its solvent filtration process. Filter integrity issues were contributing to unplanned maintenance activity, increased operator exposure during change-outs, and concerns around filtration reliability.

Working alongside the site's operations and licensor teams, Pall evaluated the application and recommended a filtration solution designed to improve reliability, support safer maintenance practices, and maintain required process throughput.

The Challenge

Reliable solvent filtration is essential for efficient PDH operations and consistent propylene production. Like other solvent loop filtration applications, contamination and filter performance can have a direct impact on equipment reliability and maintenance requirements.

Key challenges included:

  • Premature filter failures
  • Frequent filter change-outs
  • Increased maintenance workload
  • Elevated safety risks during replacement activities

The producer wanted a solution that could improve filtration reliability while helping reduce operational disruption and operator exposure.

Pall's Solution

After reviewing operating conditions and failure modes, Pall recommended a trial of Ultipleat® Highflow filter elements featuring glass fiber absolute-rated media.

The solution was selected to provide a combination of filtration efficiency, durability, and consistent performance while supporting the throughput requirements of the solvent recirculation loop. Pall worked closely with site stakeholders throughout the evaluation process to validate performance and ensure alignment with application requirements.

Results

Following the trial, the producer observed improved run-to-run consistency and filtration performance. The solution helped support:

  • Improved safety during filter change-outs
  • Higher filtration reliability
  • More consistent operation
  • Reduced maintenance requirements

As a result, the producer adopted the Pall solution for the solvent filtration application.

Why Pall

Pall combined application expertise, technical support and filtration technology to help the producer address both reliability and safety objectives.

The collaboration included:

  • Technical evaluation of operating conditions
  • Close engagement with operations and licensor teams
  • Filtration solutions validated for demanding process applications

"Pall was highly engaged during the evaluation and brought practical recommendations we could implement quickly."
